Once you are home, you may remove the bandage we placed on your tattoo.

One of the best things you can do for your new tattoo is to apply a hot compress to open the pores and flush out any blood.  This can be accomplished with one of two methods.  The first is to soak a washcloth with hot water (as hot as you can comfortably stand it) and apply it to the tattoo for 5-minutes.  You will feel a burning sensation at first, but it will go numb pretty quickly.  The second method is to take a hot shower, allowing the water to run over the tattoo (although be careful not to have the water spraying on the tattoo directly - water spraying can be rather abrasive towards the tattoo).  You can use this method each day when you shower while your tattoo is healing.

After this, was the tattoo carefully with warm soapy water.  Anti-bacterial soft-soap is ideal as it is not as harsh as other soaps.  DO NOT SCRUB YOUR TATTOO.  In the coming days, if you notice skin peeling off while washing it, do not "help" it peel.  Keep it gentle.

Lightly pat the tattoo until dry... DO NOT RUB.

Apply a very thin coat of A&D ointment to the tattoo.  You want just enough that the tattoo is no longer dry, but any more than that and you risk blocking the air that is important to the healing of your tattoo.  Two times a day is usually sufficient for your tattoo - once in the morning and once before bed.  Perform this step for the first 3 - 5 days or until any scabbing is gone.

After the initial healing process, applying hand lotion once a day will help prevent dry skin and fading of the tattoo.  Options include H2Ocean tattoo aftercare cream, Lubriderm lotion, Vaseline Intensive Care, etc.

Although re-bandaging your tattoo is not recommended, if covering the tattoo is necessary you should use a sterile bandage and use a fresh dressing each time.

During the first two weeks of the healing process, avoid soaking the tattoo under water (bath, hot tub, swimming, etc) and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.  After two weeks, use sunscreen on tattoo area when expecting prolonged exposure to sunlight in order to protect tattoo from fading.
